Letters of Recommendation

Available for Current and Former Students

Please begin by considering if I am the best person to write this letter for you. Is there another professor who knows you better? Also, I only write a few letters per semester on a first come, first served basis. Once my slots are filled, I will be unable to write your letter until the next semester so please submit your request as early as possible.

1. Please make an appointment with me to discuss your career/internship/graduate school aspirations. This can be in person or virtually.

2. Please give me 4 weeks notice so I can devote the necessary time and energy to compose a strong letter for you.

3. Please provide me with the following via email:

  • Instructions for letter writers
  • Your materials (CV, drafts of application materials–personal statements, a writing sample, a list of jobs/kinds of jobs you’re entertaining, pre-addressed stamped envelopes for any mailings, links to job/program/department, etc.)
  • Any bullet points of things/classes/experiences you would like to remind me of or bring to my attention
  • A list of deadlines (and another email reminder 1 week before each deadline).
  • I only submit letters directly to the institution or in a sealed envelope with my signature across the back. You may also want to consider using a dossier service such as Interfolio to make this process simple and easy.

If you are uncomfortable or are unable to fulfill the above conditions, please consider asking another faculty member, staff member, or administrator.

Thank you, Professor Shanté Smalls, for providing a template for this section.
